About Big Elk Garlic Farm

Hello and welcome to Big Elk Garlic Farm, my name is Frank Weakland. I run the farm with the help of my two sons, Luke & Austin. I am a first-generation farmer. My passion for farming began while I was working on farms during summer breaks in high school and after. Originally, I worked with hay and cattle. Over time, I started renting land and was able to buy my own farm equipment. In 1997, I started my own operation that consisted of mostly hay and some grain. Sadly, my leased land was lost to development. In this area in Pennsylvania, everywhere is being over-developed. This left me to figure out my next move. I was searching for a niche crop that could be grown on limited acreage. This led me to garlic farming. Around 1999, I started with just 10 pounds of garlic and a dream to have a successful farm. It was a grueling 5 years building up my garlic seed inventory. During the first five years, I didn’t sell any garlic at all! For 23 years now, I have been running Big Elk Garlic Farm. My farm is in Lincoln University, PA, which is nestled into southern Chester County. Our name comes from the Big Elk Creek, because the fields we farm touch the creek.  Over the years, I have been focusing on a strain of German white to perfect the hardiness and great taste. We now also offer Music Garlic, Elephant Garlic, and Chesnok Red Garlic which is a mix between soft and hard neck garlic. We pride ourselves on our gourmet garlic, but we also grow other produce, including several dozen heirloom tomatoes. We sell these to restaurants and wholesale companies. We also grow a variety of fig trees that we sell when they are 2-3 years old. I can’t do all the work myself. During farming season, my friends and family help with farming tasks.  The company wouldn’t be able to run without my crew.

We believe in sustainable farming practices. Our garlic is non-GMO, our compost is all-natural, and our soil is hand-weeded & herbicide-free. We employ an integrated pest management system to ensure our impact on the environment is as small as possible.
